A dedicated granny charger socket
A 13A portable charger, often called a granny charger, can be useful for occasional charging or as a temporary solution. A dedicated weatherproof outdoor socket typically costs around £150 to £250 where the consumer unit is modern and the cable route is short.
This is considerably cheaper than a 7kW wallbox, but it is also much slower. A granny charger may deliver roughly 6 to 10 miles of range per hour, depending on the vehicle and charging conditions. It should not be confused with simply running an extension lead from an indoor socket.
For regular EV use, a dedicated 7kW charger is usually safer, faster and more convenient. It also gives you access to smart scheduling and many EV-specific energy tariffs.
How smart tariffs can offset the upfront cost
A smart charger can help you charge when electricity is cheaper rather than whenever you plug in.
Tariffs such as Octopus Go offer a cheaper overnight period, while Intelligent Octopus Go can automatically schedule charging for eligible cars or chargers. Octopus currently describes Intelligent Octopus Go as offering six hours of cheaper energy overnight, but rates and eligibility can change, so always check the supplier’s current terms.

For example, suppose your EV uses 3,000kWh of electricity each year for driving. Charging at an illustrative off-peak rate of 8p per kWh would cost around £240. Charging the same energy at 26p per kWh would cost approximately £780. The difference is around £540 per year before considering standing charges, tariff conditions or changes in energy prices.
Your actual saving will depend on your mileage, vehicle efficiency, charging habits and tariff. Public rapid charging will normally cost more than home charging, particularly if you regularly pay higher daytime rates.
